Zach Cregger's 'Barbarian' Is The Craziest Movie Of The Year

by Rhett Rhodes
When it comes to horror-thriller movies and who is known for being prominent in the genre, Zach Cregger was not at all who I was expecting to join the club. Cregger is more or less known for his comedic beginnings in the comedy sketch group 'Whitest Kids U'Know' and aside from a few notable television and movie appearances, he mostly stayed out of the mainstream public eye in the last 12 years. Recently Cregger has been at the highest in his career for his newest horror-thriller movie 'Barbarian'; the movie everyone is talking about.

This has been re-occurring, in the sense of comedians making horror films, as lately one of the most popular and respected in the business is Jordan Peele, who started out in sketch comedy with 'Mad TV' and released his third film 'Nope' earlier this year. And much like Peele's movies, Barbarian is a mind twistingly insane hell ride stricken with much originality.

I love how this movie relied more on creepy aesthetics and imagery for the eerie feelings and scares and didn't rely on jump scares to keep the audience on edge. The spaces within the movie alone could make your skin crawl; a lot of almost claustrophobic and disgusting rooms/settings that truly at certain points my stomach uneasy. The suspense was all there; no spoilers but I will say after something is discovered in the basement, the demand to sit and be so curious was real and I was hooked.

The pacing seems fair, but the first 30 minutes of the movie (almost) was basically all the characters talking and us trying to find out if this is going to be some kind of romance-horror kind of thing, or if this is actually even a horror movie. Luckily right as I was questioning that about the film, things did start to happen that peeled my wig back, so my only dislike was the timing of the beginning and the events of the beginning that lead up to the horror and true story.
